When most people think of summer, they think of gathering with friends and family outdoors—and when we gather, we eat. Grilling on the back patio isn’t just functional, it’s an experience. That’s why outdoor kitchens have become one of the most requested features in custom backyard designs.
At Maplehurst Outdoor Living, we believe every great outdoor space starts with your “why.” Do you want an intimate cooking space for two, or a full outdoor kitchen where you can host family reunions and neighborhood gatherings? Once we understand your goals, we design and build a backyard kitchen that fits seamlessly into your space and lifestyle.
Designing Your Outdoor Kitchen the Right Way
The best outdoor kitchens are designed in layers. Even a small patio can include unique features, while larger spaces can be transformed into complete backyard retreats.
One of the biggest decisions is the grill itself. Gas, charcoal, wood, or combination units all have unique benefits. Beyond that, you can choose from ceramic, stainless, flat-top, rotisserie, or infrared models—the options are endless.
When it comes to building your outdoor kitchen, our preferred method is the Clifrock panel system. These lightweight, reinforced concrete panels allow us to build durable, custom grill islands without tearing up your yard. They’re strong, versatile, and perfect for decks or patios where traditional block and stone would be too heavy. With finishes like Ledgestone or Drystack, your kitchen can match the natural character of your backyard.
Levels of Outdoor Kitchens
Not every outdoor kitchen has to be a large-scale investment. We often guide clients through three levels of design:
Basic Outdoor Kitchen: A custom island with a built-in grill and countertop space for prep and serving. Perfect if you’re upgrading from a store-bought grill and need a more functional setup.
Mid-Range Outdoor Kitchen: Adds elements like a backsplash, bar seating, mini fridge, icemaker, or sink. This setup brings guests right into the action, combining cooking and socializing in one space.
Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen: For those who want it all—pizza ovens, multiple cooking surfaces, pavilion covers, sound systems, TVs, mood lighting, and even fire features for year-round entertaining.
Why Now Is the Perfect Time
As more families choose to gather at home, an outdoor kitchen is one of the best ways to invest in both your property and your quality of life. It extends your living space, creates a safe and welcoming place to host, and builds lasting memories with the people you care about most.
If you’re ready to start exploring backyard kitchen ideas for your home, now is the time to begin planning. At Maplehurst Outdoor Living, we’re passionate about helping you design spaces that go beyond function—they create experiences.
