Project Spotlight: Engineering a Hillside Patio with Custom Hardscaping

At Maplehurst Outdoor Living, every project starts with a vision — and this one was no different. Set on a steep, rocky hillside, this request for a backyard patio challenged us to turn difficult terrain into a beautiful, functional backyard destination. 

Project Goals 

The homeowners wanted a usable, level patio space where they could entertain and enjoy the hillside views. However, the existing small retaining wall wasn’t up to the task. The tiered backyard sloped too dramatically to build a patio without major structural improvements. Our team stepped in to design and build a solution that combined smart engineering, thoughtful design, and long-lasting craftsmanship. 

Tackling the Grade 

One of the biggest challenges was the steep slope behind the house. Fortunately, we found a solid shelf of rock at the base, which gave us a strong, stable foundation to build on. From there, we built a massive 12-foot-tall wall, engineered with geogrid reinforcement and carefully embedded for maximum stability. 

To avoid a rigid, overbuilt appearance, we designed the wall with a wide, sweeping radius. Custom-fabricated cable railings were shaped to follow this curve, preserving the open view while providing safety. Integrated lighting built into the railings adds a soft downcast glow at night, extending the space’s use well beyond sundown. 

Material Choices 

Because of the patio’s large scale, we chose oversized pavers for the surface. The larger format prevents the space from looking too busy and visually complements the expansive setting. We bordered the patio with a contrasting paver to subtly frame the layout and emphasize the curve of the retaining wall. 

Pool-Side Problem Solving 

Another tricky element was integrating the pool into this new layout. One corner of the pool sat close to the retaining wall, creating concerns about both weight and long-term maintenance. Our solution was to build a masonry pier foundation, tying the retaining wall blocks directly into the structural anchor for strength and cohesion. We then veneered the pier in a natural stone blend to complement the surrounding textures. 

Blending Into the Landscape

To soften the front of the retaining wall and reduce the visual height, we built a dry-stacked boulder walls and layered plant beds to add visual weight to the base. A dry creek bed alongside the boulders not only improves drainage but also adds organic texture to the space. Uplighting throughout the landscape highlights trees, architectural features, and stone textures after dark, giving the yard a warm, inviting atmosphere. 

Finishing Touches 

We completed the project with wide masonry steps and natural stone treads leading from the upper patio to the lower shoreline. Thoughtful lighting, lush plantings, and future plans for a large fire pit will continue to evolve this backyard into the outdoor retreat the homeowners dreamed of.
