From Flooded to Flourishing: How We Solved a Backyard Drainage Disaster

Project before, during and after!

When we started working on a backyard project for a client, we discovered an issue that could have turned into a nightmare: mold on the interior drywall and water pooling in their basement. The water from the backyard had seeped into the basement through the home’s flooring, creating damp conditions that led to mildew and damage. It was clear we needed to tackle the root problem before moving forward with any landscaping.

The first step was waterproofing the basement to stop water from entering the home. This involved digging to the foundation of the house. Once the foundation was exposed, we thoroughly cleaned it and sealed any cracks we found. To provide a robust barrier against moisture, we applied a waterproofing membrane followed by 40-mil vinyl.

We also addressed the foundation's footing. By working around it, we ensured that water wouldn’t seep back down into the house. To improve drainage further, we sloped the land away from the house – dropping the grade six inches over a 10-foot span – and installed drainage pipes that carried water away from the property. The backfilled area was filled with clean stone, which prevents settling and promotes better water flow before we added a layer of dirt on top.

To complete the solution, we built a retaining wall and ensured the gutters were properly piped away from the house. This comprehensive approach not only resolved the immediate issue, but also prevented future water damage, giving the client peace of mind and a dry, safe home. If you’re experiencing similar issues, don’t wait – a proper drainage solution can save your home and your health.
