Why This Back Porch Went with Pavers Over Composite Decking

When we sit down with our clients to plan their outdoor spaces, it’s not about following trends or cookie-cutter designs — it’s about creating something that fits their lifestyle, their property, and how they plan to actually use the space. A recent back porch project is a great example of how those conversations can shape a design in a meaningful way.
Originally, the plan for this back porch called for Trex composite decking. It’s a popular choice these days, and for good reason. But after a few site visits and some honest conversations about long-term durability and how water tends to settle in certain areas, our client started to have second thoughts.
The concern was stability over time, especially with the porch being partially shaded and open enough to be exposed to rain. Even with composite materials, moisture can create issues — and these homeowners didn’t want to spend their summers worrying about it. That’s when we suggested swapping out the decking for stone pavers. It turned out to be the perfect call.
Why Pavers Made Sense for this Outdoor Living Space
Pavers hold up incredibly well in Virginia’s climate. They’re durable, easy to maintain, and don’t get slick when wet. Plus, under a shaded porch area, they stay naturally cooler in the summertime compared to composite or wood decking — which makes a huge difference when you’re walking barefoot out to the grill or hanging out with the kids.
We finished off the design with a bluestone border, giving the space a clean, classic look that ties in with the home’s existing stonework. Little details like that can make a big difference in how a space feels without complicating maintenance.

This back porch might have started with composite decking in mind, but by staying flexible and focusing on what would actually work best, we ended up with a space that’s functional, beautiful, and built to last.
